Sliding Door Design Options

09/09/14, by Megan Steenson

In last week’s eNote, we gave you all the information and step-by-step instructions you need to install a bold and beautiful sliding door in your home. We loved everything about the bright green barn door we showed you, but understand that that style might not be right for everyone.

That’s why we’ve come up with two extra style options (photo above) for you to try. The installation of the hardware and door is the same, but making the doors is a little different. Keep reading for all the details.

Get a Refined Look with Flooring

Believe it or not, the planks on this door are adhesive-backed strips of vinyl flooring that cost less than two dollars apiece! “Shadow lines” stand out between the strips because of the black paint applied to the door.

Flooring Door

Start by painting the door black, and then apply a full layer of contact cement to reinforce the adhesive on the planks. Use 1/4" spacers to carefully position the planks (photo 1) and a J-roller to push them down (photo 2).

Paint a Simple Pattern

Painting a door can also create a cool effect. All you need is a brush or roller, a couple colors of paint, and painter’s tape. We chose two subdued colors for a clean, sophisticated look. But the possibilities are endless!

Painted Door

First paint the door with the color you want in the “background” of your pattern. Transfer a pattern onto the door with painter’s tape (photo 1). We created 12" squares for our pattern. Then fill in the openings with a second color (photo 2).

No matter what style of door you choose, adding a sliding door to a room is a great way to add character. Not only will the door be a stylish accent, but its small footprint opens up space for other fun items!
