It's All About the Bulbs

11/23/13, by Cate Seiser

For me, lighting plays a major role in establishing the style of a space. The commitment level of light fixtures is just big enough that you want to stick with your core style — a look you’ll love for a while — yet small enough that you can make a statement.

To achieve a modern-meets-vintage vibe in the bedroom makeover in Free Issue No. 2, we purchased Edison-Style Lightbulbs and Metallic Cord Sets from West Elm, then hung them from DIY wall brackets, which we show how to make in the article. The result is nothing short of charming. And although the trend of exposed, old-fashioned filament bulbs is hot right now, the look is really quite timeless.

There are all sorts of options available based on the same concept. Restoration Hardware carries a variety of Filament Lightbulbs that fit into Bare Bulb Filament Pendants or any number of more substantial fixtures.

For our room makeover, we liked the idea of hanging sconces beside a bed, where the bulb is a little more in your face than a high-hanging pendant. The fixtures in the Ironclad Industrial Etsy store (left photo below) and the Retro Edison-Style Wall Sconce from Stone Lighting (middle photo below) are great alternates to the look we featured.

Or, if a desktop lamp would be easier for you to work into your decor, check out the Edison Table Lamp by Roost (right photo above).

Whether your home is modern or traditional, industrial or cottage-like, there are many possibilities for incorporating this style of lighting into your decor. How many trends can you say that for?
