Has your knife collection outgrown the standard block? These clever knife blocks make even a mismatched group of kitchen knives look good. Plus, they can always adapt to fit an expanding collection.
The "blocks" are nothing more than vases packed tightly with bamboo skewers. You can simply slide knives into the spaces between the skewers.
It’s important to choose vases with straight sides for this project. You may need to cut the skewers to fit the height of your vase. To do this, start by marking a line where you want to cut them.
Now use tape to wrap the skewers at the cut line (we used electrical tape). The skewers will be easier to cut if you separate them into smaller bundles as shown here.
Use a handsaw to cut each bundle of skewers to length to fit inside the vase. Then arrange the skewers inside the vase.
Finally, slip your kitchen knives among the skewers. We made a small version for steak and paring knives and a tall one for chef's knives.
