You may not think of a door as a decorative object, but these functional home elements can make a design statement too! We turned a simple sliding door into a focal point with the addition of a surprising material.
Door to Decor. Believe it or not, the planks on this door are adhesive-backed strips of vinyl flooring that cost less than two dollars each! The planks will give your door the upscale appearance of one that cost hundreds more, and they’re easy to add.
The door shown here is attached to sliding door hardware. This mounting method makes the door unique by itself, but adding the flooring planks will take the project to the next level.
Start by painting the door black, and then allow it to dry. (The paint gives the illusion of shadow lines between the flooring strips.) Then apply a full layer of contact cement to reinforce the adhesive that’s already on the planks. Use 3/16” spacers to carefully position the planks on the door.
Once the planks are in place, it’s time to make sure that they are fully attached to the door. Rolling a tool called a J-roller over them will ensure a secure connection between the components.
