Painting pre-finished wood furniture is a great way to make it suit your style. But for great-looking and long-lasting results, you’ll need to follow a few steps.
Prep for Success. Sand the finish first, starting with 80-grit sandpaper, and work your way up to 220-grit. Follow the grain, and wipe the piece before moving on to the next grit.
Applying Paint. Priming the wood usually isn’t necessary with pre-finished pieces. But you’ll want to apply three thin, even coats of the paint itself, and follow it up with a water-based polyurethane finish.
