Make a Grain Sack Cushion
We used a vintage-style grain sack as a cushion cover to turn an old trunk into a country-style padded bench. The filler for the cushion is a pillow insert, which is the perfect size for the trunk.
If you can’t find a pillow in the size you need, use foam or another filler material from the craft store. Then attach the cushion to the top of the bench with tacks or upholstery nails to complete the project.
Slip the Insert into the Sack
Start by covering the pillow insert with the decorative grain sack. You may need to cut a small hole in the pillow first and remove some of the stuffing to slightly flatten the cushion.
Position Tacks Around the Top
Fold the grain sack’s top edge over, so the cushion is the same length as the bench’s top.
Next, attach the cushion by driving in tacks or upholstery nails around the edges of the piece. Space the tacks evenly around the top.
Tap the Tacks into Place
Use a needle-nosed pliers to hold the tacks while you tap them in. This will help you drive the tacks in straight and prevent pinched fingers.
Easy, Refreshing Makeovers
That's how easy it is to convert a rustic old trunk into a cushioned bench.
Personalizing furniture pieces with attractive textiles is an easy and dramatic way to refresh dated furniture. You can re-cover a piece that has already been upholstered, or add a custom cushion to a wood bench or chair.
