Make Your Own Board & Batten Shutters

These show-stopping shutters are an important element in this room’s coastal style. A number of retailers sell similar shutters, but they’re cheaper (and easy to customize) when you make your own.

You’ll just need some poplar 1x4s, screws, sandpaper, primer, and paint.

Cut the Boards

Determine the height of your shutters by measuring from the bottom of the lower window trim to the top of the upper trim.

Then cut eight 1x4 poplar boards (four for each shutter) to length.

Now cut three battens for each shutter. The batten length should be about 1" less than the width of all four boards laid side by side.

Sand the Edges

Next, use a sanding block and medium-grit sandpaper (about 120 grit) to bevel the edges of the boards and battens.

Assemble the Shutters

Position the battens placing two about 12" from the ends of the boards for tall shutters like these. If your shutters are shorter, you may want the battens slightly closer to the ends. Position the third batten so it is centered on the length of the boards.

Now place the boards on the battens, making sure that the ends are aligned.

Then drive screws through the boards and into the battens from the back.

Finally, prime and paint the shutters the color of your choice.

More Than Just Window Accents

These shutters have a classic look that would work well with other decor styles, too.

Of course, you can use shutters as more than just window accents. We hung a distressed, salvaged shutter above the bed to serve as a unique headboard
