A home office is a huge asset to a home, but many of us don’t have a whole room to devote to this purpose. Luckily, it isn’t difficult or expensive to convert an under-utilized closet into an office.
Storage Galore. This “instant office” offers a variety of storage options, yet the relatively small space doesn’t seem cramped. That’s thanks to careful planning and DIY details.
Most home centers carry ready-made cabinets. We mounted them to the wall of the closet to provide clutter-busting enclosed storage.
Laminate countertops are a great work surface option for a closet office. We ordered our work surface with a custom cutout, which provides a spot to slide in the chair. Then we made a slide-out keyboard tray from a 12”-wide maple board, and mounted it with keyboard tray slides.
To give the room more storage space, we purchased a rolling filing cabinet that fits under the work surface. We chose a melamine cabinet that blends well with the purchased wall cabinets.
If you’d like to get your work out of the way, it just takes a moment to slide the closet doors shut and make the entire office disappear. When the doors are open, full-access hinges make them lay flat.
